1. NMDC surpasses 30 million tones production and sales for 3rd year

  • National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), the largest producer of iron ore in the country has once again surpassed the 30 million tones figure of production and sales for the year 2018-19 for 3rd year consecutively.

a. Key facts

  • In spite of suspension of Donimalai Mine operations for 5 months, there were no exports and also was poor off take in Karnataka where NMDC has produced 32.44 MT and sales of 32.38 MT iron ore during FY-19.
  • During the year NMDC’s iron ore projects have clocked their best in a single day, monthly and annual production and sales figures.

2. Prevention of Blindness week


  • Prevention of Blindness Week 2019 will be celebrated from 1st of April to 7th of April.
  • The prevention of Blindness Week campaingn is planned ny the government of India for increasing the awareness towards the blind people.

  • Blindness is a big issue and painful condition for the people who are suffering from it which cant be felt by those who have eyes.
  • The government of India has organized a campaign to aware the people as well as offer better oppotuinities to the blind people by establishing the variety of institutes, agencies, hospitals etc.
  • Through the week people get education related to healthcare and eye care.


1. USA halts F-35 equipment to Turkey, protests its plans to buy from Russia


  • The Unites States has halted delivery of equipment related to the stealthy F-35 fighter aircraft to Turkey, marking the first concrete US step to block delivery of the jet to the NATO ally in light of Ankara’s planned purchase of a Russian missile defense system.

  • USA officials told their Turkish counterparts they will not receive further shipments of F-35 related equipment needed to prepare for the arrival of the stealthy jet.

2. Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro replaces electricity minister amid blackouts

  • Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro replaced his electricity minister in a move to address a series of blackouts plaguing the country, while opposition leader Juan Guaido called on supporters to continue taking to the streets.

a. Key facts

  • The change came as Maduro reiterated plans for 30 day ‘load administration’ plan which he first mentioned last week and which Venezuelans widely assume will be a way to ration electricity.



1. India and Pakistan scramble jets at border​​​​​​​

  • Indian Air Force (IAF) scrambled two Sukhoi-30 fighters from a forward airbase in Punjab after the Indian Army sighted a Pakistani unmanned aerial vehicle across the border.
  • Within the Sukhois getting airborne, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) responded by launching two F-16 fighters.

  • The development assumes significance against the backdrop of military tensions between India and Pakistan following the bombing of a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror base in Balakot by IAF.


1. GST revenue collection for March, 2019 crossed Rs. One Lakh Crore and recorded highest collections in the FY 2018-19​​​​​​​

  • Total gross GST revenue collected in the month of March, 2019 is Rs. 1,06,577 crore of which CGST is Rs. 20,353 crore, SGST is 27,520 crore .
  • The total number of GSTR 3B returns filed for the month of February up to 31st March 2019 is 75.95 lakh.

  • The government has settled Rs. 17,261 crore to CGST and Rs. 13.689 crore to SGST from IGST as regular settlement.
  • Further Rs. 20,000 crore has been settled from the balance IGST available with the Center on provisional basis in the ratio 50:50 between centre and states.


1. IIT Madras converts petroleum waste toluene into useful product


  • By using a platinum nanocatalyst, a two- member team at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has successfully converted petroleum waste-product toluene into benzoic acid.

a. Key facts

  • Benzoic acid is used as a food preservative (E210) and medicine for fungal or bacterial infection.
  • Toluene is converted into benzoic acid through selective and controlled oxidation in the presence of a catalyst called as binaphthyl- stabilized platinum nanoparticles.
