  • Union Minister for Home Affairs, Shri Amit Shah inaugurated the Second Ground Breaking Ceremony of the UP Investors Summit, in Lucknow.
  • Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Shri Adityanath also graced the occasion along with other dignitaries and Industry stalwarts.

  • He laid the foundation stone of over 250 projects worth Rs. 65,000 crores.

2. Floods, landslides claim 113 lives in Nepal

  • Floods and landslides triggered by incessant monsoon rains across Nepal have claimed at least 113 lives while 38 people are still missing.
  • Parts of central and southern Nepal, including some areas of Kathmandu valley, have been inundated due to incessant rains over the past two weeks.

  • At least 113 people were killed and 67 others injured in rain-induced disasters this monsoon, Home Ministry officials said.
  • At least 38 people have gone missing in the latest incidents of landslide and floods across Nepal.

3. International Tiger Day

  • International Tiger Day is observed on 29 July every year to raise awareness about the conservation of tiger and to promote the protection of natural habitat of tigers.
  • International Tiger Day is also known as Global Tiger Day.

a. Key Facts

  • International Tiger Day was established in 2010 at Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia to raise awareness about the decline of wild tiger numbers, leaving them in the brink of extinction and to encourage the work of Tiger conservation.
  • In the Summit, a declaration was made that Governments of tiger populated countries had vowed to double tiger population by 2020.

4. CRPF Celebrates 81st Raising Day

  • CRPF paid rich tributes to those who laid down their lives for the cause of the Nation at the National Police Memorial, New Delhi on the occasion of its 81st Raising Day.
  • CRPF had been raised as the Crown Representative’s Police on this very day way back in 1939.

5. RAW officer appointed as new BSF Director General

  • IPS officer V.K. Johri has been appointed as the next Director General (DG) of the country’s largest border guarding force, BSF.
  • The order has been issued by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) that is headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and has Home Minister Amit Shah as its member.

a. Key Facts

  • Mr. Johri, a 1984-batch Indian Police Service officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, is presently serving as the Special Secretary in the external intelligence agency RAW, under the Cabinet Secretariat.
  • The order also stated that Mr. Johri has been appointed as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Union Home Ministry with “immediate effect.” He will retire in September 2020.

6. Indian sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik wins People’s Choice Award in U.S.

  • Renowned Indian sand artist and Padma Awardee Sudarsan Pattnaik has won the People’s Choice Award at a prestigious sand sculpting festival in the U.S., wowing the American public with his sculpture that highlighted the message of combating plastic pollution in oceans.

a. Key Facts​​​​​​​

  • Mr. Pattnaik was among the 15 top sand artists selected from across the world to participate in the 2019 Revere Beach International Sand Sculpting Festival in Boston, Massachusetts.
  • He won the People’s Choice Award for his sand sculpture ‘Stop Plastic Pollution, Save Our Ocean’.

7. Former Union Minister S. Jaipal Reddy passes away at 77

  • Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader S. Jaipal Reddy passed away on Sunday at around 1.30 a.m. in Hyderabad. He was 77.

a. Key Facts​​​​​​​

  • He was Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Union Minister for Urban Development, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas before finally holding the subject of science technology.
  • Reddy was Union Minister in Federal front government earlier and Congress-led UPA I and UPA II regimes. He was elected to the Lok Sabha four times and Rajya Sabha twice.

8. Nobel Prize-winning physicist John Schrieffer dies in Florida

  • John Robert Schrieffer, a physicist who shared in the 1972 Nobel Prize in physics for developing a pioneering theory of superconductivity, has passed away. He was 88.

a. Key Facts​​​​​​​

  • Along with colleagues John Bardeen and Leon Cooper, Schrieffer was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for developing the BCS theory. It is considered the first successful microscopic theory of superconductivity the ability of certain materials to conduct electricity with practically zero resistance.
